Every winter, Playa del Carmen becomes one of the few places on Earth where you can observe bull sharks in their natural habitat. The experience is extraordinary — but only if you choose the right dive operator.
Not all bull shark dives are the same. The difference between a safe, unforgettable dive and a rushed, overcrowded one comes down to who takes you in the water.
Here's what to look for before you book.
1. Small Group Size
Bull shark diving is not a sport for large groups. The more divers on the site, the more bubbles, movement and noise — and the greater the chance the sharks stay away or behave unpredictably.
Look for operators that cap their groups at 4 to 6 divers per guide. At Deep Mexico, we use our own vessel La Jefa and keep our groups small by design. Fewer divers means calmer sharks, longer bottom time, and a far more personal experience.
2. Certified Bull Shark Observation Guides
This is not a standard dive. Bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen requires guides who are specifically trained in shark behavior and observation protocols.
Ask your operator: Does your guide hold a Bull Shark Observation certification?

3. Own Boat vs. Shared Boat
There is a significant difference between operators who own their vessel and those who charter third-party boats.
When an operator owns their boat, they control the schedule, the group size, and the pace of the dive. If conditions are better at a different spot, they can adapt. If the group needs more time, they take it.
Ask your operator: Is this your boat or a shared charter?
4. Pre-Dive Briefing and Safety Protocols
A proper bull shark dive briefing covers shark behavior, underwater positioning, equipment requirements, and emergency procedures. It should take at least 20 minutes and leave no questions unanswered.
Red flags: a rushed briefing, vague answers about depth or certification requirements, or guides who do not speak your language fluently enough to explain safety instructions clearly.
5. Certification and Experience Requirements
Bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen takes place at 24 to 30 meters — this is not a beginner dive.
Responsible operators require:
? Minimum Open Water certification (Advanced recommended)
? At least 25 logged dives
? Good buoyancy control
? No recent long gap from diving (if you haven't dived in 6+ months, a check dive may be required)
Any operator willing to take untrained or inexperienced divers on this dive is cutting corners on safety.
6. What's Included in the Price
Before booking, confirm what the price covers:
? Full rental equipment (wetsuit, BCD, regulator, tank, weights)
? Boat transfer to the dive site
? Professional guide in the water
? A second reef dive after the shark dive
? Marine park wristband (required to dive in the area)
