History of the Mama Viña

Unlike the military ships C-53 and C-56, the Mama Viña has a different origin: it was a steel-hulled shrimp boat that was modified into a private vessel in Quintana Roo, until it ran aground and was damaged during a hurricane. The ship now rests off the coast of Playa del Carmen, given a second life as an artificial reef.

After three decades underwater, the Mama Viña is completely covered in soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians. Schools of silvery fish inhabit its interior, while green moray eels, lobsters, and barracudas move around the structure.
