Every November, something remarkable happens beneath the surface of the Caribbean just off the coast of Playa del Carmen. Dozens of pregnant female bull sharks — some measuring nearly 3 meters and weighing over 200 kilograms — return to the warm, nutrient-rich waters near Shark Point.
This is bull shark season. And it is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters available to certified divers anywhere in the world.

When Does Bull Shark Season Start in Playa del Carmen?
The 2026–2027 bull shark season is expected to begin in early to mid November 2026.
The season typically runs from November through February, with peak sightings in December and January. In some years, sharks have been observed as late as March or April.
Best months to dive: December to February— highest shark numbers and excellent visibility (15 to 25 meters).
Important: sightings are never guaranteed. Bull sharks follow their own schedule. However, in a typical season, the encounter rate at Shark Point is extremely high — well above 90% on most dive days.
What Happens During a Bull Shark Dive?
The dive takes place at Shark Point, located a short boat ride from the coast of Playa del Carmen. Here is what to expect:
Before the dive
Your guide will conduct a detailed safety briefing covering shark behavior, underwater positioning, equipment requirements, and emergency procedures. This briefing is mandatory and typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes.
The descent
You will descend to approximately 24 to 30 meters (78 to 98 feet). This is a deep dive — buoyancy control and air management are essential.
On the seabed
You will kneel on the sandy bottom and observe. The sharks approach out of curiosity. They circle, pass close, and move on. Your guide will position the group for the best sightings while maintaining safety at all times.
Bottom time
Maximum 30 minutes, always within no-decompression limits.
After the bull shark dive
A shallow reef dive at one of Playa del Carmen's top reef sites is included. A perfect way to decompress — literally and figuratively.
Who Can Dive with Bull Sharks?
Bull shark diving is not for beginners. The depth, current, and proximity to large animals require solid diving skills.
Requirements at Deep Mexico:
? Minimum Open Water certification (Advanced Open Water recommended)
? At least 25 logged dives
? Comfortable buoyancy control
? Full dark wetsuit — no bright colors
? No camera flashes or video lights
If you have not dived in more than 6 months, we may ask you to complete a check dive first. This is for your safety and the safety of the group.
Is Bull Shark Diving Dangerous?
This is the most common question we receive — and the answer is: no, not when conducted by a responsible operator with proper protocols.
Bull sharks are powerful and curious animals. They are not aggressive toward divers who behave calmly, maintain neutral buoyancy, and follow guide instructions.
In over two decades of bull shark dives in Playa del Carmen, there has never been a serious incident with a properly briefed, supervised group.
What makes a dive dangerous is poor preparation, large groups, panicked divers, or operators who cut corners on safety. Choose your operator carefully.
Why Playa del Carmen? Why Not Cancun or Cozumel?
Bull sharks are only reliably found at one dive site in the entire Riviera Maya: Shark Point, off the coast of Playa del Carmen.
If a dive operator offers you "bull shark diving in Cancun" or "bull shark diving in Cozumel," they are almost certainly taking you to Playa del Carmen anyway — just with extra travel time and cost.
Playa del Carmen is also significantly closer to the cenotes of the Riviera Maya, which makes it the ideal base for divers who want to combine bull shark diving with cenote exploration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book a private bull shark dive?
Yes. Private dives are available for individuals or small groups who prefer a fully exclusive experience. Contact us for pricing.
What if the sharks don't show up?
This policy applies only when you do not enter the water for the shark dive and we notify you before the dive that conditions are not favorable for a sighting. In that specific case, we will offer a rescheduled dive at no additional cost, subject to availability. Once the dive has taken place, it is considered a completed observation dive, regardless of the number of sharks seen, since sightings in the wild can never be guaranteed.
Can I use Nitrox?
Yes, if you hold a Nitrox certification. There is an additional cost for the enriched air fill.
What should I bring?
Your certification card, a dark wetsuit if you have one, and your sense of adventure. Everything else is provided, including your marine park wristband, which is required to dive in the area and is included in the price.
