Hello, fellow divers and future underwater explorers! I'm Gustavo from Deep Mexico. I've spent the last 33 years immersing myself in the wonders of the ocean, logging over 16,000 dives on this incredible journey. I’ve had the privilege of exploring aquatic corners all over the world, but there's one place that has a magnetic pull, a site that always calls me back
Cozumel!
If you've ever wondered whether it's worth taking the ferry to dive this gem of the Mexican Caribbean, my answer, after thousands of dives, is a resounding and emphatic YES. Cozumel isn't just one of the best diving destinations in the world it's an experience that redefines what it means to dive.
The Unmatched Magic of Diving in Cozumel
So, what makes diving in Cozumel so special? Let me break it down for you from the logbook of an instructor who has seen almost everything
Out-of-this-World Visibility The waters surrounding the island are famous for their almost surreal clarity. With visibility often exceeding 100 feet (30 meters), the feeling isn't like swimming, but like flying through a giant, liquid crystal aquarium. It's pure magic!
Breathtaking Reefs Cozumel is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Its formations are a true spectacle coral gardens bursting with life and vertical walls that plummet into the deep blue, creating underwater landscapes that will leave you speechless.
The Thrill of Drift Diving Get ready to float and flow! On most of Cozumel's dive sites, the current does the work for you. You glide effortlessly and silently over the reef, covering vast distances with minimal effort. It’s a feeling of absolute freedom. Of course, excellent buoyancy control is key, and at Deep Mexico, we’ll make sure you master it!
A Guaranteed Explosion of Marine Life
If you love marine life, Cozumel is your personal paradise. On our tours, close encounters aren't just a possibility they are a promise. Expect to see
Sea Turtles You will see these majestic creatures, like Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtles, gliding elegantly through the reefs.
Eagle Rays Especially at "El Cielo," where they dance around you in shallow, incredibly turquoise waters.
Sharks From the calm nurse sharks resting on ledges to, for the more adventurous in deeper spots, the possible and thrilling appearance of hammerhead or bull sharks.
A Carnival of Reef Fish Huge schools of barracudas, queen angelfish, rainbow-colored parrotfish, and thousands of other tropical species turn every single dive into a festival for your eyes.
My Favorite Cozumel Dive Sites (and why you should dive them with us)
I know Cozumel like the back of my hand. These are the sites that are, in my opinion, absolutely unmissable, and that my team and I will guide you through with the safety and knowledge that only years of experience can provide
Palancar Reef An absolute classic that never disappoints. Its famous caves, tunnels, and massive coral formations create a labyrinth of underwater beauty. Exploring its "Gardens" and "Horseshoe" sections is a must-do.
Santa Rosa Wall Pure adrenaline! An impressive vertical wall that drops into the abyss, decorated with giant sponges and a frequent home for nurse sharks. We will guide you with complete safety on this thrilling drift dive.
Punta Sur (Columbia Deep) This one is for advanced divers looking for a challenge. Its stronger currents attract pelagic life, and the formations are spectacular. If you're ready for this challenge (or want to get ready with our
PADI Advanced Open Water course), we'll take you there.
El Cielo Although it's a shallow dive, this place is heavenly. It's famous for its white sand bottom and the incredible number of starfish and eagle rays. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing second dive, which we always include in our plans.
