When cenote diving at Eden, you actually enter the cavern area, and swim underneath the jungle. A halocline is a phenomenon that occurs in freshwater cenotes where a layer of fresh water meets a layer of saltwater. This meeting of the two layers creates a visible line, or halocline, that separates the two bodies of water.

At Cenote Garden del Eden, the halocline is particularly noticeable because of how clear the water is, and the amount of sunlight that enters the cenote. You can see the halocline as a shimmering, blurry layer that appears to move and shift as you pass through it. creating a distorted optical illusion that can be disorienting for some divers.

The halocline at Eden is also unique because it has a clear temperature shift. When swimming through the halocline flow, as well as see the blur in the water, you can also feel the water get a little warmer! As cenotes are generally colder than the ocean anyway – Tip wear a wetsuit! – it’s a noticeable change, but interesting to experience.


Cenote Eden for Snorkelers

If you are not a certified scuba diver, you can still experience the beauty of Cenote Garden del Eden by snorkeling. The water in the cenote is shallow, and the visibility is excellent, making it a perfect spot for snorkelers. Visitors can swim through the clear water and see the unique rock formations and freshwater fish up close.
