Discover the magic of scuba diving in cenote Jardin del Eden

Scuba Diving at Cenote Garden del Eden

The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its cenotes, which are natural sinkholes filled with crystal clear, fresh water. Cenotes offer a unique diving experience that is different from the usual reef and ocean dives.

Cenote Jardin del Eden (Cenote Garden of Eden) is named after the biblical garden due to its immense natural beauty and wildlife. For both scuba divers and snorkelers, it is a beautiful place to visit during your trip to the Riviera Maya.

In this article, we will share insights about scuba diving at Cenote Eden and why it is a must-visit site to add to your diving bucket list!

What is a Cenote?

Cenotes are unique natural formations that are found only in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. These sinkholes are formed when the limestone bedrock collapses, creating a hole in the ground, which is then filled with fresh water from underground rivers. The water in the cenotes is crystal clear, with visibility up to 100 meters, making it one of the best diving experiences in the world.

Scuba Diving at Cenote Eden

Cenote Garden del Eden is located in the jungle, a short drive from Playa del Carmen. Once you reach the water, you will see that the cenote is circular and surrounded by rock formations. The cenote is popular with people who visit for swimming and day trips, and they are always excited to see the divers in their full scuba gear set-up.
When cenote diving at Eden, you actually enter the cavern area, and swim underneath the jungle. Even though you are diving in an overhead environment, you are under the supervision of a highly trained cave guide. This cenote is a great choice for even novice divers, as the cavern area is quite wide, so you can manage your buoyancy comfortably.
For this dive you need to only be Open Water Certified.

The dive at Garden del Eden starts with a descent into the cenote through a small opening, close to where the entry platforms are. The dive begins at a depth of around 10 meters, and as you descend into the cenote, you will be surrounded by beautiful rock formations and unique cave systems. These formations are created by the constant flow of water over thousands of years. Eden cenote is also home to a variety of fish, including catfish and other freshwater species.

See into Cenote Coral

As you swim through Cenote El Eden, you will see that you head towards another opening. This is actually another cenote, named Coral. These cenotes are connected by the underwater rivers, as most of the cenotes in the region are.

Eden and Coral are part of the Ponderosa system. Swimming towards Coral is what makes a dive at Eden so special. The light show that occurs as the sun's rays penetrate the water, create beams that shine down into the cenote. You can see the light dancing around you, creating a surreal and magical experience.

It's an unforgettable moment that you will carry with you long after your dive.

Halocline at Cenote El Eden

A halocline is a phenomenon that occurs in freshwater cenotes where a layer of fresh water meets a layer of saltwater. This meeting of the two layers creates a visible line, or halocline, that separates the two bodies of water.

At Cenote Garden del Eden, the halocline is particularly noticeable because of how clear the water is, and the amount of sunlight that enters the cenote. You can see the halocline as a shimmering, blurry layer that appears to move and shift as you pass through it. creating a distorted optical illusion that can be disorienting for some divers.

The halocline at Eden is also unique because it has a clear temperature shift. When swimming through the halocline flow, as well as see the blur in the water, you can also feel the water get a little warmer! As cenotes are generally colder than the ocean anyway – Tip wear a wetsuit! – it’s a noticeable change, but interesting to experience.

Cenote Eden for Snorkelers

If you are not a certified scuba diver, you can still experience the beauty of Cenote Garden del Eden by snorkeling. The water in the cenote is shallow, and the visibility is excellent, making it a perfect spot for snorkelers. Visitors can swim through the clear water and see the unique rock formations and freshwater fish up close.
Lifejackets are available to rent for those who need them.

For thrill seekers, there’s also a platform that people like to jump from, into the cenote water below.
